Brr! It is cold in here.

When your furnace won’t kick in and the temperature is dropping, it can be frustrating when a technician comes out and finds a breaker is tripped or your thermostat is set incorrectly. Here are some tips to help prevent a potentially unnecessary service call.

1 – Check your thermostat.
– Do the batteries need replaced?
– Is the temperature reading correctly?
– Is it close to the temperature set point? (within a couple degrees)
– Is it set to heating?
– Try increasing the temperature a couple degrees. Does your heating system kick in?

2 – Has the furnace switch been turned off? This will be a light switch in your basement that may or may not be labelled, and doesn’t control any lights.

3 – Has the breaker in the electrical panel tripped?

4 – Check the air filter – is it blocked? If you remove it, does the unit kick on?

5 – Is your venting blocked?

6 – Still no heat – call a licensed HVAC contractor to come and take a look.
