We often get calls about pushy or fishy door-to-door sales people. Whether they are promising HUGE rebates, or insisting your venting needs upgraded, they aren’t always being completely honest with you. As a consumer, you have very specific rights as laid out in the Ontario Consumer Protection Act (learn more here).
It may sound great that you are getting a brand new furnace for no installation charge and only 59.99 a month, but what about the fine print? If you are considering renting your furnace, air conditioner or water heater from a door-to-door sales company, there are some questions you should ask. Does that monthly fee have an annual increase? What are the cancellation fees? Can you transfer the rental if you sell your home? Who is going to service my equipment? What happens when I need service during a snow storm or peak service times?
If you have signed a contract for an item valued over $50 in your home, you have a 10-day cooling off period for furnaces and air conditioners, and a 20-day cooling off period for water heaters. That means you can cancel at any point and don’t have to give them a reason.
