This winter has been one of the toughest we’ve had in a while. With what seems like non-stop periods of time with temperatures below -20C, and snowstorms that can last an entire week, heating equipment has been working overtime to keep homes warm and comfortable.
Did you know the furnace filter will make the furnace work harder if it has been ignored? By not having a clean or fresh filter, you are asking your furnace to run a marathon while breathing through a straw.
When your furnace can’t breathe, it increases the static pressure on your blower motor. This can cause your blower motor to burn out. It can also cause premature equipment failure, and does increase energy and fuel consumption.
How can you prevent these issues?
Check your furnace filter!
Check it at the start of heating season and cooling season. This will make sure your furnace will be able to circulate air during the two seasons you use it most.
Check it monthly. While circulating air, check the filter monthly to make sure it hasn’t become blocked and isn’t preventing air flow.
No matter what size of filter you have, check your filter regularly. By checking it, you can change it before it is too blocked that your furnace can’t breathe.
Change your filter!
There are a few factors to consider for changing your furnace filter. A key indicator that it needs replaced is the filter is dirty.
If you live in a small house with one or two people, no pets and no smokers, your filter will last longer then those living in an average size house with pet(s), smokers, and multiple people.
If you are constantly circulating air, the filter will catch dirt and debris at a faster rate.
If someone in your home has allergies or asthma, changing it more often will help alleviate the symptoms.
If you have a 1″ pleated filter, it will need changed more often then a 4″ or electronic air cleaner.
If it is a washable filter, a quick vacuum will clean it up in a pinch, but make sure to wash it at least once a season.
Get your unit Serviced!
Have a professional come and complete a precision tune up, maintenance or annual service on your unit. The technician will make sure your unit is operating properly and advise you of any concerns. Your filter will likely be checked and replaced if needed during the service.
