Before you turn that air conditioner on this Spring, there are a few things you should do to prolong the life of your unit.
– Check air filter – replace if required
– Wash air filter – if you have a washable filter, the changing season is always a good time to start fresh with a clean filter.
– Replace batteries in smoke alarm, thermostat and CO detector
– Clean bathroom exhaust fans
– Remove any material that was used to cover air conditioner
– Remove organic matter from around the unit (leaves, grass)
– Trim any shrubs, bushes or plants that are growing close to the air conditioner
– Change any ceiling fans to spin in counter-clockwise rotation
– Close dampers to basement air runs if basement is usually cooler
– If comfortable and experienced, rinse outdoor unit with hose (or leave for a professional)
– Turn on AC disconnect (located by the furnace outside)
– Check that no breakers have been turned off inside
– Switch thermostat from heating to cooling
– Switch fan setting to “ON” for constant air flow (if desired)
– Book your annual service
