This winter, when a storm hits, be prepared to stay warm. Here are some tips on how to keep your home or office warm through a cold snap or snow storm.
Remember if you have to go outside during a snow storm, make sure it is safe to do so, and make sure someone will check on you if you’re gone too long.
• Check the outside vents. Your furnace won’t work if the vents are buried under snow. Be sure to check your vents more than once if there is a lot of snow accumulation.
• If you have a heat pump, check that it isn’t covered in snow or frozen. If this has happened, switch your thermostat to emergency heat and pour warm water over the outside unit. Allow for it to melt before switching back to regular operation.
• Do you have a generator? Is it ready if the power goes out? Do you have extra fuel in case it is needed? Make sure it is ready outside.
• Wood burning appliance? Do you have enough wood inside to last through the storm? Have you removed the ashes?
• Do you have a smart thermostat? If so, you should be able to monitor your house or office temperature from your phone or computer and can monitor if any issues are occurring.
Now that you’re ready for winter’s next blast, curl up with your family and enjoy!
