This fall, it seems like we keep getting teased with bits of winter. Eventually it will be here.
Here are some tips on getting your home ready for heating season and improve your home’s energy efficiency.
• Clean gutters to prevent blockages or build up that could cause damage this winter
• Seal any visible cracks
• Locate and seal any drafts
• Check and repair window and door seals/weather stripping
• Turn off Air Conditioner disconnect
• Have a maintenance completed on your heating equipment by a licensed contractor
• Fill propane and/or oil tanks, and schedule subsequent fill ups throughout the winter
• Shut off water to outside faucets and drain
• Change air filters and humidifier pads
• Checked Carbon monoxide detector and smoke alarm (are the operational and are the batteries new?)
• Flush hot water tank to remove sediment from the bottom and test relief valve
• Reverse direction of any ceiling fans to keep warm air circulating
• If you insist on vent covers, install screens to allow equipment to operate. Do not cap vents.
